7:19 Not quite right. If EITHER sense an airspeed of BELOW 260 knots, then they WILL allow you to lower the gear. Only if BOTH sense and airspeed ABOVE 260 knots, then they will NOT allow you to lower the gear. So if one says 200kt and the other says 300kt, the system allows the gear to go down. The implicit assumption is that the higher-reading one may be faulty, and the pilots know best when they ask for gear down.

Makes me think of my first task, as I was waiting to begin flight training in Pensacola: Wheels Watch safety officer. I got to watch training pilots make touch & goes at a training field. I was equipped with flares and a radio in case some novice pilot wanted to land with wheels up. Never got to shoot a flare.

If we look at the altitude of the aircraft he has dropped from 10,000ft MSL to be 2000 ft MSL in 3 min. Which is almost 2,700 ft a min decent. And compare that the altitude of other aircraft making the same approach he is very high to even start his approach. Could be at the time when they went over the before landing check list he was too fast to deploy the landing gear because of this steep decent. Also as you mention the marks on the runway suggest aircraft being at a high speed. This might explain the crew failing to have the gear down. Just a theory though. Will have to wait for the report and see.

If the gear is lowered too early, does the system eventually allow it to deploy once the speed is within allowable limits? Or does it continue to lock out the gear lowering until the lever is moved back to the gear up position?

Typically, demonitization occurs because of key words, because individuals cannot review all uploaded videos. However, credible and revelatory channels that inform interested people are often targeted for person review for bizarre concerns of "conspiracy theory" particularly regarding mass tragedy. Of course, it is inconsistently enforced.

Something was very wrong in the cockpit. How could a pilot AND co-pilot both be, what it seemed, unaware that their gear hadn't deployed? Seems like at least one of them would have caught the mistake with the warning alarm, checklist, etc. But then again there was that incident in Australia in 2019 where the ATC had to contact the pilots of the Vietnam Airlines Flight 781 to warn them that their gear wasn't deployed which thankfully resulted in a go-around (google: australia vietnam landing gear). So what was this? Crew resource management issue (like Asiana 214 in SF)? Fasting fatigue? Delirium? Very, very sad and disturbing.

All speculative, but landings can be surprisingly rough and bumpy. they may have very well thought the gear was down, and confused that "feeling" with the engines scraping the runway. If your mind is tuned to expect a certain thing, you can believe it for a split second before reaction. It may be the pilots thought they were in a successfull landing before reality took hold.

So it's looking like they came in too high and hot, the gear wouldn't deploy (due to interlock), they touched down long, and then bounced on the engines (causing catastrophic damage), managed to get enough power to try a TOGO before both engines failed (thus the RAT deploy) during the go around. I can't imagine the terror on both the flight deck and the cabin.

A few smoking guns, really need the flight recorder to see what really happened. It would also be interesting to see if the crew had proper rest or other red flags that would contribute to poor judgement if that is what the final result is. Also; it appears to me that if you land on the engine cowlings, you are much better off going ahead letting the aircraft slide to a stop. Those engines will not last long enough for a go around.

Juan, I want to say first thank you for your excellent and always respectful coverage of these tragic accidents. I found you the day of Kobe’s crash. I am interested in flying as I’ve logged many hours as a travelling sales rep selling software for many years, and my husband is particularly interested in historical planes. For our wedding gift I gave him private flying lessons with a pilot I met on a flight once who happened to live in the same city as us. My hubby was pretty happy about his time in the air. We are fortunate to live 5 minutes from the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum, for Father’s Day a couple years ago I bought us a family pass and on Father’s Day they have a bbq and have lots of pilots on hand to talk about the planes and the really cool thing is you can’t pay to fly in several of the warplanes, I bought my husband tickets for the North American B-25 Mitchell, my plan was to buy him a ticket for the Lancaster but those are $3600 but that flight is 60 minutes, his flight on the B-25 was supposed to just be 20 minutes ( still pricey at $650/seat) but the Chipmunk had to do anemergecy landing in a farmers field so the plane my hubs was on circled around it until an emergency crew got there , everyone was fine and my husbands 20 minute flight turned into a 60 minute flight. I have to say though my heart kinda did a lunge to the bottom of my stomach when they announced over the loud speaker they wanted to see me at the ticket booth for the B-25, when I got there they said , there’s been an emergency landing ( heart evevatored to the basement) then they say, it wasn’t his plane that he’s on, but he will be longer than anticipated as they are circling until emergency crews get there. Yeash. I’m telling you I wheeled my son ( in a stroller) right over to the beer tent and downed a cold brew just to take the edge of the rattled nerves ! Anyway, sorry for the long story. Just really came here to tell you how much we both enjoy your content. Thank you for what you do.

Wasn’t this one of the first flights in Pakistan after Corona virus travel restrictions were lifted? If these pilots weren’t flying for a couple months could they simply have been “rusty”? Of course I don’t know anything about these pilots and their immediate flight history prior to this flight, but in general, if pilots and planes are idle for weeks, how difficult is it getting them both back into peak flying performance?

Boeing is MUCH better, in my humble opinion. \ NEVERTHELESS??? Airbus made that decision in their design and...I think it was meant to "SELL" to the lowest common denominator, AKA, the "third world". Hi, I you first video on the matter you showed a landing slope diagram with time and feet. From what I now understand with the gear down alarm. wouldn't it be fairly simple for a guy like you and all the pro's following you channel to calculate the ground speed for the aircraft as you guys properly have a measure for distance from the first time on you chart to the touch down 1435... This will give a ruf estimate of ground speed for the aircraft, thus supporting you theori of being unable to lower laning gear?

I was thinking there must be a one-way (sprag) clutch somewhere immediately after the PTO (which is what I shall to refer to the output from the turbine shaft as) but then when I saw the 'handcrank' section realised there probably isn't (unless it can be taken out of the equation for maintenance). Hopefully there's a sacrificial connection somewhere, like a keyway, though so in the event of mechanical failure of any of the accessory components driven by that gearbox it can't bind up the works. As a mechanical engineer this is quite interesting.

Hard to imagine how they managed this one. Two pilots and I thought the A320 was a reasonably idiot proof airplane, obviously not. If the airplane wouldn’t let the gear go down due to the speed it probably wouldn’t let much or any flap be extended. Then there is the EGPWS squawking at them “ too low gear” and who knows what else. All caught on the CVR hopefully. If the airline industry ever recovers from the pandemic it’s time to start seriously considering autonomous aircraft. For every disaster a pilot uses his/ her amazing superhuman skills to avert, many more I think are caused by their stupidity.
